Registering Adhesives and Sealants for the Transportation Industry
In the transportation industry, adhesives and sealants are essential for bonding and sealing various parts of vehicles, watercraft, aircraft, and spacecraft. These high-performance structural adhesives ensure the integrity and durability of critical components, such as motor and rail vehicle structures, watercraft hulls, and aircraft or spacecraft assemblies. To ensure these adhesives meet safety standards and are compatible with the high demands of the transportation industry, manufacturers must register their products with the EU Poison Centre. This registration provides vital information about their chemical composition, safe handling, and emergency response procedures in case of exposure.
What is a UFI?
A UFI (Unique Formula Identifier) is a code assigned to chemical products, including adhesives and sealants used in the transportation industry. The UFI must be displayed on the product label and is part of the Poison Centre Notification (PCN). The UFI helps emergency responders identify the specific product and its hazards in the event of an accident, ensuring proper handling and response during emergencies.
What is a PCN?
A PCN (Poison Centre Notification) is a legal obligation for manufacturers to notify the EU Poison Centre about their chemical products. For adhesives and sealants used in the transportation industry, a PCN ensures compliance with safety, labelling, and regulatory standards. The notification includes essential product data such as chemical composition, hazard classification, safe usage instructions, and emergency contact details, providing first responders with the necessary information in case of exposure.
What is CLP?
CLP (Classification, Labelling, and Packaging) is a regulation that governs the classification, labelling, and packaging of hazardous chemicals. For adhesives and sealants in the transportation industry, the CLP regulation ensures that these products are clearly labeled with appropriate hazard symbols, safety instructions, and handling precautions. This ensures that users understand the risks associated with the product and can take proper safety measures during use.
What is the EU Poison Centre?
The EU Poison Centre is a centralized database maintained by the European Union that contains critical safety and regulatory information about hazardous products. Manufacturers are required to submit a Poison Centre Notification (PCN) to ensure that their products, such as adhesives and sealants for the transportation industry, are included in this database. The Poison Centre enables emergency responders, healthcare professionals, and poison control centers to access important information quickly in case of chemical exposure incidents.
Why is This Needed?
Registering adhesives and sealants for use in the transportation industry with the EU Poison Centre is vital for product safety and compliance with European regulations. The PCN provides emergency responders with essential product information, allowing them to respond effectively to any exposure incidents. The registration also ensures that the product meets the CLP classification standards and is safely labeled for use in the high-risk environment of the transportation industry.
Since When is It by Law Obligatory?
The legal requirement to submit a Poison Centre Notification (PCN) for hazardous chemical products, including adhesives and sealants used in the transportation industry, became mandatory on January 1, 2021. From this date, all manufacturers and distributors must ensure that their products are registered with the EU Poison Centre before they are marketed in the European Union.
