Registering Adhesives and Sealants for Paper and Board Related Processes
Specialized adhesives and sealants used in paper, board, and related processes are essential for industries such as packaging, labelling, paper-to-board lamination, and bookbinding. These products are designed to ensure strong, durable bonds between paper and other materials, contributing to the production of high-quality, safe, and effective packaging and printed materials. To ensure these adhesives meet safety and regulatory standards, they must be registered with the EU Poison Centre. This registration helps in maintaining product safety and compliance, providing vital information for emergency responders in case of exposure.
What is a UFI?
A UFI (Unique Formula Identifier) is a unique code assigned to chemical products, including adhesives and sealants used in paper and board related processes. This code is required to be displayed on the product label and is part of the Poison Centre Notification (PCN). The UFI helps emergency responders quickly identify the product and understand its potential hazards, which is critical in case of exposure incidents.
What is a PCN?
A PCN (Poison Centre Notification) is a legal requirement for manufacturers to notify the EU Poison Centre about their chemical products. For adhesives and sealants used in paper and board processes, a PCN ensures that the product complies with safety, labeling, and regulatory standards. The notification includes essential data, such as the product’s chemical composition, hazard classifications, safe usage instructions, and emergency contact information.
What is CLP?
CLP (Classification, Labelling, and Packaging) is an EU regulation that dictates how hazardous chemicals must be classified, labeled, and packaged. For adhesives and sealants, the CLP classification includes hazard symbols, signal words, and safety instructions that inform users of the product’s risks. This regulation helps ensure that products used in paper, board, and packaging industries are safely handled and used according to their chemical properties.
What is the EU Poison Centre?
The EU Poison Centre is a central database that stores information about hazardous products within the European Union. It is designed to provide emergency responders, healthcare providers, and poison control centers with access to critical information in case of exposure to hazardous chemicals. Manufacturers are required to submit a PCN to the EU Poison Centre, ensuring that their product information is included and available for emergency management and safety protocols.
Why is This Needed?
Registering adhesives and sealants used in paper and board related processes with the EU Poison Centre is crucial for ensuring their safety and compliance with EU regulations. This registration provides emergency responders with the information they need to manage exposure incidents effectively, improving consumer safety and reducing health risks. It also guarantees that the product is labeled according to the CLP regulation and that the chemical composition is transparent and understood in case of emergencies.
Since When is It by Law Obligatory?
The legal requirement to submit a Poison Centre Notification (PCN) for hazardous chemical products, including adhesives and sealants used in paper and board related processes, became mandatory on January 1, 2021. From this date, all manufacturers and distributors must ensure that their products are registered with the EU Poison Centre before marketing them in the EU.
